Yahoo! Pipe

I mentioned Pair.com’s system upgrades the other day, which have now been accomplished and went off — from what I can tell — without a hitch for all the sites I host. Bully for them, and for me!

Before the upgrade happened, I emailed Pair.com support and got a prompt reply that yes, indeed, there is a way to get notifications of system status beyond their web page of notifications — there’s an RSS Feed.

I subscribed to the feed but found that it contains more information than I really need. I’m hosted on only one machine, so I only need information on that.

So this morning, in just a few minutes, I set up a Yahoo! Pipe to allow me to filter this feed to just my own server. I think it’s pretty wonderful, and it was easy to set up the pipe, which in its edit mode looks like this:

Pair.com System Notices Filter (Yahoo! Pipe)

If you are a Pair.com user, visit Pair.com System Notices Filter, enter your server name, and Y!Pipes will provide you with a feed you can subscribe to using your feedreader of choice. There’s also an option to get notified of changes to this feed via email or mobile phone. I subscribed to the feed, and also signed up for notifications to my mobile phone.

Advanced Glow Effects

Step 1:

As with pretty much every tutorial I’ve ever written we begin with a radial gradient. This one is pretty harsh and goes from a reddish brown colour to black. Here are the exact colour codes:

Foreground colour - #922f00
Background colour - #000000

Photoshop Tutorial: Displacement Water

By: aliased

Creating a realistic water surface in Photoshop is quite a challenge because it is the distorted reflection of the surroundings that makes the water look liquid. The displace filter is an excellent tool for making this distortion.

The displace filter “shifts pixels” in an image according to the brightness values of a displacement map. You can use any .psd file as a displacement map (if saved with “Maximize compatibility”). Read more »

Arabic calligraphy

In a previous post someone well spoted that I was playing with “Arabic” numbers, which are in fact Indian numbers (the circle means 5 and the dots are zeros.) It’s the Westeners who use Arabic numbers such as: 1,2,3.

Arabic_calligraphy

I’m fascinated by the look of the Arabic script. It’s out of this world. If Spielberg would have invented a writing for a new planet it may have been similar in looks to the Arabic script.

I think Arabic calligraphy is a form of art that has superseeded any other culture in its category. It’s highly complex and has many layers of meaning.

I won’t to go into details. You start doing that here if you wish. Allow me to just touch upon the subject and show you a few interesting examples.

Step-and-Repeat in Photoshop

“Step-and-repeat” is the term used for the process of duplicating an object and spacing. Read more »

Reflection

Prepare the object you want to make a reflection for. Don’t forget to place it on its own transparent layer.

Now we have got to make a space for the reflection, go to Image> Canvas Size… double the Height size and add some space on the width, in the Anchor box set it to the top, so the space will be beneath the object. Press OK.

Creating Reflection with Photoshop CS

This tutorial will show you how to make a reflection with your Photoshop. I used Photoshop CS2 when creating this tutorial, but I guess it does not make any difference even if you do it with Photoshop CS.

Picture used on this tutorial is Australian Parliament House in Canberra, by Free-StockPhotos.com

Reflection

Step1: Open your image, copy your background layer, and fill your background layer with white

Ocean Mist Scenery

First, start a new document, I used an equal size preset of 500×500.
Create a new empty Layer (Shift + Ctrl + N (Mac: Shift + Command + N)), just above the default document background Layer.

Next, set the Foreground Color to a variant of blue (I used #7AA6E 8) and set the Background Color to Black #000000.

Next, go to ‘Filter/Render/Clouds’ to that your first effect is similar to what I have captured below.

Ocean1

Next, go to ‘Filter/Render/Fibers’ and select a setting that your comfortable with, so that you can see (though in vertical direction) varying crests of waves within the render. (My settings are captured below)
